Former Detroit Red Wings Hall of Fame forward Sergei Fedorov has penned a heartfelt love letter to the fans of Hockeytown on the eve of his jersey retirement ceremony.
The Wings went into Montreal Saturday and in a battle for first place in the Atlantic Division came away with a convincing, impressive 4-0 victory.
Fedorov, one of the greatest two-way players in franchise history for 13 seasons from 1990-91 to 2002-03, helped the team win three Stanley Cups. He won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 1994 and is a two-time winner of the Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward.
The Wings won their third straight, 4-0, with goalie John Gibson stopping every shot from the Montreal Canadiens.
Fedorov was in Detroit in November as the Wings celebrated their 100th anniversary as an organization. Fedorov called the jersey retirement a "tremendous honor" and said memories and emotions have flooded him.
The No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference, the Carolina Hurricanes (28-14-3), and the conference's second-ranked squad, the Detroit Red Wings (27-15-4), take the ice on Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena. The game airs on ESPN+. Carolina earned a 3-2 victory at home its last time out on Jan. 10 against the Seattle Kraken.
Skeptics doubted Detroit's depth scoring and goaltending. Now, a star goalie's revival and balanced scoring fuel their stunning NHL turnaround.
